Hatched Academy

Ensemble Offspring’s Hatched Academy supports outstanding young performers and composers to become the future leaders of innovative new music in Australia. This national program, now in its 12th year, encompasses three annual streams:

  • the Hatched Composer Intensive selecting four Australian composers to develop a new work for Ensemble Offspring with guest composition mentors each year, plus the opportunity for a biennial follow up commission;

  •  the Hatched Emerging Artist position offers year long career opportunities and mentorship to one instrumentalist;

  • and the Hatched Mentorship Program provides guidance to regional and metropolitan participants through virtual sessions with core members of Ensemble Offspring.

Internationally recognised composer Brett Dean is the Hatched Academy Ambassador, while EO clarinettist Jason Noble is Hatched Academy Director.

"Hatched Academy alumni are the who’s who list of successful young Australian artists, many of whom have already made a name for themselves on the international stage. Navigating your way as a young musician specialising in contemporary music is not easy, but Ensemble Offspring’s Hatched program, with its hands-on and focused approach, plays a central role in creating a formidable Australian new music scene.” – Brett Dean, Hatched Academy Ambassador

The Hatched Composer Intensive is a unique year-long opportunity for four emerging Australian composers. Selected composers create a new chamber work for Ensemble Offspring, supported by international composer mentors, a lead mentor, Jason Noble and Claire Edwardes through performer presentations, industry sessions and online lessons.

The highlight of the program in November 2025, is an intensive week of workshops with the ensemble and lead mentor Holly Harrison, culminating in Future Classics, a high profile premiere concert at the Sydney Opera House. A new addition to the program, biennially, one Hatched Composer Intensive participant will be selected to compose a $4,000 ‘Hatched Alumni Commission’ supported by the Amici Syndicate, to be featured in a future Ensemble Offspring season.

The Hatched Composer Intensive has been the launch pad for many successful young Australian composers, watch the 2024 showreel and see our testimonials below.

Hatched Composer Intensive

Each year, one elite Australian instrumentalist who demonstrates a passion for new chamber music is selected to join Ensemble Offspring as our Hatched Emerging Performer (formerly called Associate Artist). This flexible year long mentorship allows the selected artist to devise the best use of Ensemble Offspring’s expertise and resources in association with our Artistic Director and Hatched Academy Director. This includes creative and business mentorship as well as core series performance opportunities with EO, kick starting a successful performance career specialising in living new music.

Throughout the year the selected artist is also assisted to commission, develop, premiere and professionally document a new work by an Australian composer chosen in collaboration with Ensemble Offspring. The soloist is guided throughout the process, drawing from EO's extensive experience and connections as the most prolific commissioners of new music in Australia. From 2026, there will be a rotating selection of instruments to be considered for the position.

This program is valued at $10,000
EOIs are now open, closing Monday March 31 (for our 2026 season) and will be open to instrumentalists who play percussion, violin, viola, cello or trumpet.

Hatched Emerging Performer

The Hatched Mentorship Program is a chance for emerging musicians of all practices to learn from Ensemble Offspring’s core musicians. As shorter and more casual mentorship compared to our other positions, the Mentorship Program provides several one-on-one sessions (in person or online) with the participant’s chosen mentor over several months to develop concepts and relationships.

Participants can use these sessions in any way they deem beneficial to their artistic practice; this may include instrumental, composition or music business skills sessions, or advice on career pathways and budgeting and project funding.

The Hatched Mentorship Program occurs from July each year and is open to participants from the age of 16. We encourage those considering the Composer Intensive for the first time to also apply for this program as it supports a wide range of experience levels.

The sessions can be held online. We encourage applications from regional artists and artists with a disability.

This program is valued in kind at $750 per participant
Applications are now open, closing Monday March 31 (for July-September 2025).
